Artist Elio Raffaeli

ELIO RAFFAELI: Born in Venice in 1936 to a Muranese family, Elio Raffaeli lived and studied on the Island of Murano, the glassblowing capital of Venice. At the age of fifteen, he was hired by the Seguso-Dalla Venezia glass factory where he made the acquaintance of Piero Scaramal, his first master. There he was taught the basic secrets of the magic art of Murano. Raffaeli worked with Scaramal for seven years, first as a garzone and subsequently as first assistant, maturing both as a person and as a glassblower.

Misfortunes at the Seguso-Dalla Venezia factory compelled him to move to another prestigious firm, Salviati. Here Raffaeli refined his capabilities as a glass master, perfecting both the techniques of blowing delicate glass pieces and those of making solid glass sculpture.

In 1966 he moved on to a newly formed factory, Briati, where he was hired as a master and given a piazza. Here he began to interpret with balanced precision the designs of the famous Flavio Poli. Next Raffaeli went to work with Livio Seguso, one of the great 20th century sculptors, where he forged a working relationship and friendship with the young Roberto Cammozzo.

ARTIST  ALBERTO DONA'

Alberto Dona was born in Italy in 1944. He began working in the glass field at age 13. He worked with various furnaces and masters and even had the opportunity as a young man to work with glass in Venezuela. His foremost influence was the maestro "Nane" Ferro, who was known in Murano during the '60's as one of the best masters.

In the early '70's Dona opened his own furnace. He became known for his skill with colors and his ability to invent unique color combinations. Most characteristic, however, is the large size that Dona is able to achieve with his shapes. These qualities have attracted companies from Venini to Reflex to Saporiti, who have depended on Dona for glass accessories. By the end of the '80's Dona's talent also attracted many artists, including the Santillanas, Lino Tagliapietra and Dale Chihuly, with whom he then collaborated.

In the same way Dona learned from older glass masters, he is now teaching and encouraging younger glassblowers. Under his tutelage and working by his side are Luca Zane and Sandro de Sanzuane. In this way Dona continues the thousand-year tradition of glass-making in Murano
